Wills and estate planning for expats

A UK will does not automatically cover assets in another country. Get the paperwork right in each one.

Assets in two countries can make a single will unreliable. The right setup avoids delays, disputes and surprises for the people you leave behind.

What gets looked at

  • What you own in each country and how it is held
  • Whether your home country will works alongside a local will
  • Guardianship wishes for children
  • Joint accounts and what happens if one owner dies

Common questions

Is my UK will valid in the country where I live?

Not always in practice. Courts where an asset sits usually decide what happens to it, so a locally valid will is often the safer route.

Where can I register a will abroad?

It depends on the country. In the UAE, for example, options include the DIFC Wills Service Centre and the Abu Dhabi courts. A qualified local will writer can advise.

How often should I review my will?

After any move, marriage, birth or major purchase, and every few years otherwise.
